Where is Hyperliquid available? Restricted countries explained

The rule

Hyperliquid’s Terms of Use define restricted persons as, in substance, people and entities who reside in, are located in, are incorporated in or have a registered office in the United States of America or Ontario, Canada, together with those in jurisdictions subject to applicable economic and trade sanctions or export control laws.

Everywhere else can use the exchange. That is roughly the whole world minus those two named places and the sanctioned list.

Access is by region, not identity

This is the detail that distinguishes Hyperliquid from a centralised exchange and confuses people coming from one.

There is no identity check. Nobody asks for a passport, a proof of address or a selfie. What exists instead is a geographic restriction on the interface and a contractual representation you make when you use it: that you are not a restricted person.

Two consequences follow.

The restriction is broader than it looks. The terms also reach citizens of restricted territories regardless of where those citizens are, so it is not a simple test of where you happen to be sitting.

And the restriction is contractual, not technical. That is precisely why circumventing it is a bad idea rather than a clever one: the exposure is not that a wall stops you, it is that you have made a false representation in an agreement, on a venue where an account can be restricted.

More countries are being added. If yours is missing, the general rule above answers it: unless you are in the United States, Ontario or a sanctioned jurisdiction, the exchange is available to you.

What “available” does not mean

Available is not the same as regulated, and the difference matters.

Hyperliquid is not licensed as a broker or an exchange in most of the countries where it is reachable. There is no investor compensation scheme, no ombudsman and no regulator to complain to. If something goes wrong, self-custody means you carry it.

That is a reasonable trade if you understand it. It is a bad surprise if you assumed that reachable meant supervised.

Tax is separate from access

Being able to use the exchange says nothing about your tax position. Most jurisdictions tax trading gains regardless of where the venue is or whether it reports anything to anyone. No identity check does not mean no tax obligation.
